CARPOOLING
/ LOT "G" / PARKING GARAGES:
Planning is underway to reserve up to a dozen spaces in lot J for
carpoolers during the fall semester when parking is going to be at a premium on
campus due to new construction. Please
start discussing possible carpool partners for the fall semester. Also, a special effort will be made to
encourage parking in lot "G" coupled with the short eight minute walk
to OLLI or a short trip on the OLLI Trolley.
Good news: Past President Barbara
Talento and Extended Education Dean Norman's office have secured an agreement
with the CSUF Parking office which now allows OLLI members to park in the CSUF
student parking garages. This will be a
huge benefit once the new parking garage is completed behind our lot
"J". Please say "thank
you" to Barbara Talento for all of her efforts in this regard.

the hungry boxes are placed in AB for your convenience and volunteers deliver
the food to the FIES pantry in Fullerton. FIES is based in Fullerton and is a
non-profit, faith-based organization that provides food, transitional housing

self-sufficiency and end hunger and homelessness for families and individuals.
Your contribution of foodstuffs is really appreciated by our less fortunate.

BEST OF
ECLECTICS III – Wednesday July 8 • 1:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. • Shapiro Wing CD
Speaker:
Maralys Mills: Face it! Ernest Hemingway and the author of Fun with Dick and
Jane used the same words. They just arranged them differently. Writers like
Frank McCourt (Angela’s Ashes), and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird), all
discovered small, nearly invisible techniques – tricks that made their writing
shine. These same techniques are available to ordinary writers who simply want
to craft a few good sentences. This talk offers clear, simple rules for
improving your writing skills. How many people know, for instance, that in a
majority of sentences, the most important word should be saved for last? Or
that you can’t keep gluing your sentences together with as? Or that simple
prepositions can make your writing more sophisticated. How many aspiring
novelists know that they’re more likely to get published without an agent?
Maralys Mills is a creative writing teacher (Teacher of the Year in 2000),
author of twelve published books, including Damn The Rejections, Full Speed
Ahead: The Bumpy Road to Getting Published.
* NEW
VISTAS IN SCIENCE – Thursday July 9 • 10:00 a.m. - noon • McKay Auditorium
3000
Genome Projects Later: and Now What? - Speaker: Dr. Nikolas Nikoladis,
Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, CSUF. Post-genomic
research is currently focused on identifying the functions of the genes whose
sequences have been elucidated by genome projects. A major aim is to correlate
which changes in genes lead to specific diseases so we may be able to predict
and treat human conditions. In our laboratory, we aim to identify and
characterize molecules involved in the immune system that recognize pathogens
and proteins that function when cells are exposed to elevated temperatures or
stresses (heat shock proteins or hsps). We are applying the relatively new fields
of comparative genomics, i.e., comparing the genomes of various organisms to
ascertain the function of human genes and proteomics, the study of the proteins
encoded by a genome, their structure, and functions. Our research aims to
investigate the molecular mechanism by which hsps from different species
function and understand the physiological significance of these functions for
the activation of the immune system.

The
CLECAT Club will hold its monthly Q & A session on Thursday, July 9 at noon
