BEST OF ECLECTICS III – Wednesday July 8 • 1:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. • Shapiro Wing CD

Speaker: Maralys Mills: Face it! Ernest Hemingway and the author of Fun with Dick and Jane used the same words. They just arranged them differently. Writers like Frank McCourt (Angela’s Ashes), and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird), all discovered small, nearly invisible techniques – tricks that made their writing shine. These same techniques are available to ordinary writers who simply want to craft a few good sentences. This talk offers clear, simple rules for improving your writing skills. How many people know, for instance, that in a majority of sentences, the most important word should be saved for last? Or that you can’t keep gluing your sentences together with as? Or that simple prepositions can make your writing more sophisticated. How many aspiring novelists know that they’re more likely to get published without an agent? Maralys Mills is a creative writing teacher (Teacher of the Year in 2000), author of twelve published books, including Damn The Rejections, Full Speed Ahead: The Bumpy Road to Getting Published.

* NEW VISTAS IN SCIENCE – Thursday July 9 • 10:00 a.m. - noon • McKay Auditorium

3000 Genome Projects Later: and Now What? - Speaker: Dr. Nikolas Nikoladis, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, CSUF. Post-genomic research is currently focused on identifying the functions of the genes whose sequences have been elucidated by genome projects. A major aim is to correlate which changes in genes lead to specific diseases so we may be able to predict and treat human conditions. In our laboratory, we aim to identify and characterize molecules involved in the immune system that recognize pathogens and proteins that function when cells are exposed to elevated temperatures or stresses (heat shock proteins or hsps). We are applying the relatively new fields of comparative genomics, i.e., comparing the genomes of various organisms to ascertain the function of human genes and proteomics, the study of the proteins encoded by a genome, their structure, and functions. Our research aims to investigate the molecular mechanism by which hsps from different species function and understand the physiological significance of these functions for the activation of the immune system.

What are the pros and cons of each? What kinds of differences are there between the products raised by each method? Can organic methods provide sufficient food for the world’s needs? * BEST OF ECLECTICS II - Thursday June 25 • 1:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. • McKay Auditorium African Americans in Congress: From the Period of Radical Reconstruction to the Obama White House - Speaker: Ernie Bridges, Lecturer in Afro-Ethnic Studies, CSUF. We will begin with the arrival of Senator Hiram Revels of Mississippi and Representative Joseph Rainey of South Carolina on Capitol Hill in 1870, and more through history to President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009. In striking aspects, the history of blacks in Congress mirrors that of other groups that were new to the political system. Throughout African-American history in Congress, members viewed themselves as “surrogate” representatives for the black community nationwide rather than just within the borders of their individual districts or states. Collectively, African Americans in Congress overcame barriers through three eras of participation that can be classified as pioneering (1870 - 1901), apprenticeship (1929 - 1970), and mature integration (1971 - 2008). At each point we will examine how, while seeking to advance within Congress and adapt to its folkways, each generation of black members was challenged by racial prejudice, both overt and subtle; exclusion; marginalization; and an inability to organize that lasted for many decades. This lecture is very timely and important to all of us.

The first 15 minutes is devoted to instruction by one of our members who has played in five major Texas Hold 'Em tournaments. At 3:30 p.m., we begin play with the winner at each table determined by the player holding the most chips at the end of play at 5:00 p.m. This game is a lot of fun and excitement and allows our members to learn the game while sharpening their skills. Come and enjoy! We have room for additional players and being a novice adds to the fun.

Spanish American War, to World War I, the internet-bloggers and the
election of Barack Obama, various forms of media have determined our
history and cultural trends. The two sessions (June 9 and June 23)  will
cover newspapers, radio, television, film, the internet, the Depression,

The Facts Behind the Fluctuating Costs of Fossil Fuels and Fuel
Alternatives - Speaker: Dr. Mark Filowitz, Associate Dean, College of

the rise and fall of gasoline and other fossil fuel products. Certainly,
the newspapers and the airwaves provide numerous, often conflicting,
explanations. Few of us, however, are aware of the actual process of
bringing oil out of the ground and into our gas tanks. A faculty member
with a long career in the oil industry will shed light on the mystery
behind fuel prices, as well as the promise of and obstacles to
alternatives. The discussion will detail the long journey petroleum
takes from reserves spread across the globe to our local filling station
and the costs involved in making that trip.

MEET ORANGE COUNTY: AUTHOR GUSTAVO ARELLANO - A Personal History Monday May 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fullerton Public Library. The Library is located at 353 W. Commonwealth Ave. between Harbor Blvd. and Euclid Ave – admission is free!

Gustavo will talk about his new book, Orange County: A Personal History, his experiences in the OC, and will sign copies of his book. Orange County, a part personal narrative, part cultural history, is the outrageous and true story of the man behind the wildly popular and controversial column ¡Ask a Mexican! and the locale that spawned him. Orange County is a tale of growing up in an immigrant enclave in a crime-ridden neighborhood, but also in a promised land, a place that has nourished America’s soul and Gustavo’s family, both in this country and back in Mexico, for a century. Orange County was selected by Fullerton College for their 2009-2010 “One Book, One College” program. Gustavo Arellano received the President's Award from the Los Angeles Press Club, an Impact Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and a 2008 Latino Spirit Award from the California State legislature for his "exceptional vision, creativity, and work ethic." His ¡Ask a Mexican! column has a circulation of more than two million in 36 markets (and counting) and was anointed by The Washington Post as "in" for 2008 (Miss Manners is "out"). Arellano, a contributing editor to the op-ed page of the Los Angeles Times, has appeared on Today, Nightline,
NPR's Talk of the Nation, and The Colbert Report.

Auditing CSUF Classes

Requests for Auditing and Electronic Blackboard Access

OLLI members are permitted to audit regular CSUF classes with the permission of the instructor and space permitting.  To audit a class of your choice, you need to  complete  the OLLI Member Student Audit Request form from the OLLI office and complete it.

Then take your completed form to the first class and contact the professor for permission to audit the class.

Many instructors now use CSUF's Internet "Blackboard" in place of paper handouts to communicate their class outline, assignments, notes, and other information to the students.  If you need access to the blackboard for your selected class, complete and submit the form at http://cle.fullerton.edu/temp/info.asp . This request goes to a CSUF Extension's internet service individual. This person will send Patsy an email that she will reply to to confirm that you are a CLE member. Upon confirmation,  you will be sent your password for the Blackboard.  This should occur within 2 to 4 school days following your initial submission. If not, let our OLLI office know.

After you receive your password, use your Web browser to view the Blackboard Welcome page at http://fullerton.blackboard.com.

On this first Welcome screen, click on the Login icon in the top-left corner of the page.  On the next screen, enter your User Name and Password.  Then on the following screen you will see that it states WELCOME (your user name). On the right side of this screen, it will
state MY COURSES – this is where you should be able to access your class information.

Again, If you can't login to your Blackboard account, let our  office know.
